Introspection

“Introspection:” In todays use, this word has a rather nebulous meaning that is primarily self-focused. It’s a reflective, inward look at one’s own thoughts and feelings.
Some may call it “soul-searching” or “self-scrutiny.” A scene like this beckons one to such quiet introspection. This lush, Oregon coastal scene of the Sweet Creek waterfall cascading into a stone-line pool surrounded by verdant vegetation has a way of calming the soul and removing all external distractions. This was the terminus of a short hike outside of Mapleton, Oregon that led us through a canopy of moss-covered trees and lush ferns lining the trail. Some cooler morning temperatures had prompted the first leaves of fall to change color and begin to line the pool. The gentle waterfall issues an inaudible call to sit still beside the waters. The forest, birds, gentle breezes and tumbling stream, provide a balm that leads to a time of “introspection.”
That inward search can become rather unguided without some kind of external standard to compare ourselves to. The Biblical psalmist, David, seeking a more objective approach to introspection said in this prayer: “Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts; and see if there be any hurtful way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way.” (NASB PS. 139:23,24)
